Mary Judana Morgan, my 3x great-grandmother

When Mary Judana Morgan was born on 14 March 1802 in Barking, Essex, her father, Edward, was 27, and her mother, Juda, was 19. She married William J Lines on 2 June 1822 in St Stephen Coleman Street, London. They had nine children in 15 years. She died on 9 September 1858 in Ilford, Essex, at the age of 56.

By the late 18th century Barking was the main market town for the area and the largest parish in Essex. House counts suggest several hundred houses by the 1790s and a population near 4,000 when Mary was born. Late 18th-century maps show Barking as a small built-up area in a mostly rural district of fields, marshes and country houses. The River Roding and its wharves were central to the town’s layout, with Fisher Street, later part of Abbey Road, running parallel to the river and housing many in the fishing community.

Mary married William J Lines on 2 June 1822 in St Stephen Coleman Street. In 1841 she was living at White House, east of Barking. The 1851 census shows Mary on Goodmayes Lane with husband William and children Fanny (25), Frederick (24) and James (14).

Mary died in Ilford, Essex, on 9 September 1858, at the age of 56.
