Joshua Boulter was my great-great-great-grandfather.

Joshua Boulter was born in 1775 in Titchfield, Hampshire. With his wife Mary, he had three sons and three daughters between 1797 and 1809. He died in June 1840 at age 65 and was buried in Titchfield.

In the late 1700s, Titchfield in Hampshire was a typical English village near the River Meon and the Solent coast. Its origins dated back to Saxon times, and it had long served as a centre for agriculture and small-scale trade. The village was centred around St. Peter’s Church, one of the oldest churches in Hampshire. Most people worked in farming or local trades such as blacksmithing, carpentry, milling, and brewing. The marriage certificate of his son George in 1841 shows his occupation as a Servant, so perhaps he was employed at Titchfield Abbey, a former medieval abbey converted into a grand private house and seat of the Delme family by the 18th century.

I cannot find any record of their marriage, but he married Mary, likely before their first child Hannah was born in 1797. They had five more children: Edward in 1800, Thomas (my great-great-grandfather) in 1802, Elizabeth in 1803, Maria in 1806, and George in 1809.

Joshua spent his entire life in the Titchfield area and died there in 1840. He was buried on 10 April 1840 in St Peter’s Church, Titchfield.
