John McLaren is my three-times great-grandfather.
As is common for records of this period, the spelling of John McLaren’s surname is uncertain, possibly due to illiteracy or inaccurate record-keeping. According to available records, John McLaren was born on 8 November 1785 in Inveraray, Argyll. He married Maria Spence or Spenser on 12 June 1814 in Inveraray and Glenary, Argyll. The couple had four children: Jane Maria (1816), Mary (1818), Margaret – my 2x great-grandmother (1822) and Isabella (1823). It is possible that John died in 1847 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, at the age of 62.
