When my three times great-grandfather, Daniel Pender, was born in 1801 in Stockbridge, Midlothian, his father, Alexander, was 41, and his mother, Sarah, was 37. He married Barbara Plenderleith on 8 November 1821 in Midlothian. They had nine children in 16 years. He died on 23 May 1867 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, at the age of 66, and was buried there.

Daniel had four siblings, all born in Colinton, a small village to the west of Edinburgh. Sometime before his birth in 1801, the family moved to the Stockbridge area around what would become Raeburn Place. The name “Raeburn Place” only appears after the area was feued and built up between about 1814 and 1825, on land belonging to the portrait painter Sir Henry Raeburn. A new “Stock Bridge” over the Water of Leith was built in 1801, replacing the earlier timber bridge and improving access from the New Town towards Stockbridge and Raeburn’s lands.
In 1821, Daniel married Barbara Plenderleith on 8 November. Between 1824 and 1840, they had nine children: Euphemia (1824), Daniel (1826), Alexander (1826), John (1828), Christina (1831), Georgina (1835), William (1836), my great, great grandfather, Jane (1836) and George in 1840.

In 1841, Daniel and his family were living at Raeburn Place; Georgina does not appear on the 1841 census, which suggests she had died. Daniel is employed as a journeyman upholsterer alongside his son. The census of 1851 shows the family now living on Deanhaugh Street, still in the Stockbridge area, Daniel, wife Barbara and sons Alexander, William and George. By 1861, the family, with now just George and Georgina at home, are still living in Stockbridge at 4 Allan Street.

Daniel Pender died on 27 May 1867 most likely at 4 Allan Street, Edinburgh.
