Ancestral regions tell you where your ancestors likely lived around 1,000 years ago and how much of your DNA matches people from those places.

Like everyone, I inherited half my DNA from my mother and half from my father. Before receiving my DNA test results, I expected my ancestral regions to be split about fifty-fifty between Scotland and England, since my mother was Scottish and my father English. However, I was surprised to see that SE England and NW Europe accounted for almost a quarter of my ancestral regions, traced through my father’s side. About 20% of my DNA is from other parts of England, with a small percentage of Norwegian and Welsh DNA, also through my dad. The rest comes from Gaelic regions, mostly Central Scotland, with the remainder from Connacht, Ireland.
