My Aunt, Elizabeth Galloway, was a keen photographer and collected many old photographs of family and friends, which she kept in large photograph albums. The oldest photograph in the collection is one of my great-grandfather, John (Johnathan) Angus Galloway, who was born in Edinburgh and remained there throughout his life. It’s a magnificent studio photograph of him, taken sometime in the mid-1880s, with a beard and wearing a bowler hat.
Before her death in 2004, I had the opportunity to sit down with her and review the albums, during which she described
and explained the photographs. The collection spans over one hundred years of history, offering a glimpse into the fashion and clothing of the time. There are also numerous photographs that were sent home during the First and Second
World Wars.
Some of the photographs are in relatively poor condition, and I am slowly restoring them.
