Harriet Louisa Kimber, my three-times great-grandmother.

Harriet Louisa Kimber was born on 22 November 1812 in Barking, Essex. Her father, William, was 32, and her mother, Jemima, was 26. She married Charles Lazell on 27 March 1830 in her hometown. They had five children. She died in March 1870 in West Ham, Essex, at age 57.

On 27 March 1830, she married Charles Lazell in St. Margaret’s Parish, Barking, Essex, England. A year later, their first child, Harriet Louisa, was born.

Harriet’s husband, Charles, was an agricultural worker and in 1841 they were living in Becontree with children Harriet (10), Maria (8), Sarah (6), Charles (4), and Emma (2).

Life was difficult for the family. The average wage for an agricultural labourer was about nine shillings, less than the UK Minimum Wage today. Most of this went to food and fuel, leaving little for anything else. With constant threats of poverty, unemployment, eviction, and diseases like cholera, many families lived on the edge.

By 1861, the family had moved to New Street in Barking: Charles (50), Harriet (49), Mary (12), and Louisa (9). Charles is still employed as an agricultural worker.

Harriet died in March of 1870 at the age of 57.
